Swimming Pool Installations Requiring Retaining walls

Beautiful pool with retaining wall with shrubs and acting as water falls. Retaining walls are required on any project that has significant grade or elevation challenge. They are used on all types of swimming pool projects whether a gunite pool, fiberglass pool, or vinyl pool is being installed. There are three types of retaining walls that we typically get involved with.  They are a shot-in-place gunite wall, cinder block (CMU) and segmental retaining wall.

Shot-in-place Gunite Pool Walls

Custom Design Gunite Pool with spa and circled by a retaining wall with coping. Often we are able to shoot in place retaining walls while installing our gunite pool shells and can potentially reduce the cost of the wall because we are already on site shooting the gunite pool shell and just need to deal with additional materials. There are many variables on each installation, but with proper engineering we can utilize the outer wall of the pool as a freestanding retaining wall.  This area of the pool will be exposed so picking your finish with a Southern Poolscapes consultant will be on the to-do list. The finishes are many and can range from stone cladding, stucco, paint, pavers, and tile.

Cinder Block Walls (CMU)

Retaining Wall surrounding a house with shrubs and other landscape features. Concrete masonry unit walls or cinderblock walls are another way to retain your yard. This process involves pouring a concrete footer with the correct rebar schedule and then laying the blocks in place to create the structure. The wall is then finished by filling the cells on the block to solidify the wall. The exterior then needs to be finished just like a shot-in-place wall, although decorative blocks can also be installed as an acceptable finish.

Segmental Retaining Walls

Tall retaining wall below another retaining wall. Segmental retaining walls are most often used around swimming pools and also are prevalent in yards, commercial properties and roadways as a staple in construction with elevation issues. These wall systems use gravity, Geo-grid, and interlocking blocks to retain the material behind them. We prefer to install Anchor segmental retaining walls and are certified and licensed to do so. This expert knowledge and experience allows us to take on the entire scope of your project from the pool out to the multi-terraced patios, walkways, staircases, and outdoor living spaces. Even though we are a swimming pool construction company, we also contract strictly retaining wall and hardscape projects due to our expertise and history in this industry. There are many colors and options when it comes to your retaining wall selections and a Southern Poolscapes design consultant will help educate you on each option to achieve the right product for the right application.
